HP: A Pioneer Shaping the Desktop Laser Printer Revolution

HP: A Pioneer Shaping the Desktop Laser Printer Revolution

2025-12-04

As a benchmark enterprise in the global printing industry, HP has profoundly reshaped the development trajectory of office printing through continuous technological exploration and product innovation, with its laser printer business marking a series of milestone achievements.

HP's foray into laser printing began in the 1970s through a collaboration with Canon. At that time, commercial laser printers were as large as automobiles, priced at a staggering $175,000 in 1976 with exorbitant maintenance costs. Breaking this predicament, HP launched its first laser printer, the HP 2680A, in 1980, reducing the device to the size of a handcart and slashing the price to $100,000 while enabling text-image mixed printing.

A pivotal breakthrough came in 1983 with the HP 2687A, codenamed "Bonsai"—the world's first desktop laser printer. Boasting a resolution of 300 dpi, it pioneered HP's self-developed PCL printing language, which was later opened to the entire industry and became one of the standard control languages in the printing field.

The year 1984 witnessed HP igniting the desktop printing market at the COMDEX exhibition with the improved HP 2686A, officially named LaserJet. Priced at $3,495, this printer delivered 8 pages per minute with nearly no noise, selling nearly 250,000 units in its first year and creating a brand-new market segment for desktop laser printers.

Since then, HP has continued to deepen its technological prowess, introducing toner-drum separation technology to lower consumable costs and expanding its product portfolio to cover color inkjet and large-format printers. Its commitment to localization is evident in China, where the new generation of "Zhan" series laser printers, launched in 2024, are compatible with domestic operating systems such as UOS and HarmonyOS. By early 2025, HP's cumulative shipments of A4 printers in China had reached 50 million units, solidifying its leading position in the market.
